Animated butterfly

Why the butterfly?

The church is situated on Moor Lane, a narrow lane that wanders down until it peters out on Downley Common. The church is to be found at this point and is built on a steeply rising bank on the top of which is a row of cottages. Locally the bank is known as Butterfly Bank, though no-one is sure why

bluebells photoFor many years a Red Admiral butterfly made its home in the church. Maybe it was a succession of offspring, nevertheless every Spring a butterfly would appear and flutter around the church during services. This went on throughout the summer. The congregation became as attached to the creature as it had become attached to us.

Then one day someone caught it and freed it outside.

It still occasionally returns and is remembered by the butterfly logo that appears in the header of the church stationery and in the window of the schoolroom.
